Thursday Night Sunset Drive on the Cherohala Skyway

For any that are interested (and arriving early) there will be a Thursday night drive down the Cherohala Skyway. It's a great way to kick off the weekend! Last year's drive was the biggest yet with close to 30 cars! Because of the larger numbers, we're going to leave a bit earlier this year. We will be gathering in the parking lot across the street from the Phillips Motel around 6:30pm and leaving by 7:00 to ensure that we reach Santeetlah (the highest point on the Cherohala) by sunset. We then continue on to the other end of the Cherohala (there's a great little burger stand there if you get hungry) and make the return trip in the cover of darkness. The view of Tellico Plains from the Cherohala at night is something to behold! Don't forget to bring a jacket or sweatshirt, it gets chilly at altitude when the sun goes down. Look forward to seeing you there! (Please note: this is not a "spirited" run, this is sightseeing.)

Here's a photo from last year's run just to get you in the mood.

I think I'll do his run. I wonder if the little restaurant or the little ice cream shop in the heart of down town Tellico Plains will be open? Nevertheless It's a beautiful ride & if the weather cooperates the sky is Awesome. :applaud:

Just a quick thought I had this morning... If this run ends up being even larger than last year, we may want to split to two groups, or at least have someone further back that knows the run. Any Sunset Drive veterans wish to lead a 2nd grouping of cars?

I haven't put my two cents in, but I do plan on going with up to 5 cars in tow. It's a great place to see stars at night

My wife and I will be in. She's more interested in the less spirited drives and this sounds like a good one.

Yeah, this is an awesome run, especially if you get the timing right and get to the good overlook in time to watch the sun set.

I just wanted to thank everyone that tagged along for the Sunset Drive, it was such a great time! I finally got the timing right, the clouds parted at just the right time, it didn't rain at all, we didn't get stuck behind a camper and nobody got lost or left behind! Also, for those of us that made the full run over and back, Tellico Beach Drive In still had the grill on, the sky cleared up completely and there was no moon. Stargazing from atop the Cherohala is something everyone should experience. It can't be put into words how amazing it really is. Once again, thanks to those who enjoyed this drive with me. Next year...

Thanks for taking it on, James :) It was a great ride over and was perfect. I just wish we could have stopped with y'all on the way back to stargaze a bit, but we had some more Miata folk coming to stay in our cabin, so we had to get back to let them in.

For those of you who missed out, the Sunset Cherohala run is a wonderful run and a great way to start off MATG. You should try to make it next year!!

We missed it...it wasn't meant, but we were in Knoxville a little too long and we were a little late coming back. We will try again next year...hopefully we will have my daughter, son in law, my brother and his girlfriend in tow as they are Miata owners as well! :)
