Thursday Night Sunset Run on the Cherohala Skyway

For any that are interested (and arriving early) there will be a Thursday night run down the Cherohala Skyway. It's a great way to kick off the weekend! We will be gathering in the parking lot across the street from the Phillips Motel around 7pm and leaving by 7:30 to ensure that we reach Santeetlah (the highest point on the Cherohala) by sunset. We then continue on to the other end of the Cherohala (there's a great little burger stand there if you get hungry) and make the return trip in the cover of darkness. The view of Tellico Plains from the Cherohala at night is something to behold! Don't forget to bring a jacket or sweatshirt, it gets chilly at altitude when the sun goes down. Look forward to seeing you there!

Here's a photo from last year's run just to get you in the mood.

We'll be lined up for this run again this year... We did it last year and it was a great trip. I'll second the suggestion of a sweatshirt or jacket, and pants... it does get quite a bit chilly at 1 mile up or so after dark :-) but the view is amazing and the Cherohala is a lot of fun in the dark!

Depends on if any of Mr. Daniels' Finest has been consumed by starting time. If not I'll be along. ;-) (I'm staying at The Phillips)

For those that have not made this run, the Cherohala at Night is Amazing. We Must stop at Hookers Bald (IIRC that's the name) on the way back just to star gaze, it's a few miles into NC on the way back & ~5500'. Hopefully the weather will cooperate & the skies are clear. If so, then tripods, cameras & long exposure times are definitely required.

I don't wear long pants in the summer so a towel across your knees will keep your legs nice & toasty, but a jacket or sweatshirt is needed for the rest of you. ;-) The towel ~ 24"x36" can be velcroed to the bottom edge of the dash if you think you need it. I've not had a problem just having it lay across my knees & tuck the near edge under the lap belt. When I get out of the car I just throw it in the top boot.

Hope to have a good turn out. :drive:

Ken,

I don't think I want to know what's on your mind, but it's Hooper's Bald.

I'm coming in on Thursday and staying at Phillips. The current plan is to leave the Philly area Wednesday about 4:00 pm and drive until I'm tired enough to stop for the night. It'll make for a long drive on Thursday so I'll see if I can get an earlier start on Wednesday.

If I get there in time, I would like to join you on this run.

Thanks, Bill

Just wanted to thank everyone that tagged along for the sunset run... what a wonderful time it was! Great drive, great sunset, great photos and great conversation. It turned out to be much more popular than I expected with close to 30 cars at the start! (Last year we had 7, the year before, 5) I'm going to have to rethink a couple things for next year, maybe a slightly earlier departure time to facilitate more sightseeing stops on the way up to Santeetlah? (EDIT: and to make it to Tellico Beach Drive In before they start cleaning the grille?)
